Most of the stories are just whispers in the dark, mere rumors about the KGB's latest secret -- a man with no background and no name, who's more weapon than man: a killer in unarmed combat, silent death with a knife, and deadliest of all with a rifle.

They call him the Winter Soldier.

He's said to move like a ghost, crossing borders without difficulty, blending into crowds and shadows with equal ease. Some say he's just a myth.

The dead, of course, say nothing at all.

Height: 5'9"
Hair color: dark brown
Eye color: brown/hazel

Unless active on a mission or otherwise specified, the Winter Soldier always wears long sleeves and gloves of some type to conceal the fact that his left arm is not flesh, but a metal, robotic appendage with a red star just below the shoulder.

When off duty or gathering intelligence, he has a quick, easy smile and a sometimes-sardonic sense of humor.

Although he doesn't know it, he bears a startling resemblance to a man named Bucky Barnes - but if asked, he'll insist that he's never heard of the guy.

He hasn't. At least, not that he remembers.

(Once upon a time, before the winter came, there lived a man named James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, from Shelbyville, Indiana. He lost both parents at a young age and soon ended up in Brooklyn, New York, where he met another orphaned kid by the name of Steve Rogers. It wasn't long at all before the two of them became fast friends, and they stayed that way ever since.

When the second World War started, Bucky joined the US Army as soon as the need became clear. He was assigned to the 107th infantry and sent overseas as soon as he finished basic training.

After the battle of Azzano, Bucky was captured by the enemy and ended up in a HYDRA factory lab at the nonexistent mercy of the Red Skull and Arnim Zola, until he was rescued by Captain America - who turned out to be Bucky's boyhood friend Steve. Bucky promptly joined his friend as one of the Howling Commandos, and served with the others by Steve's side until he was lost on a mission and presumed dead. Although his body was never recovered, it seemed the only possible assumption, given that Bucky had fallen from a train into an icy abyss, deep in the Alps.

However, assumptions like that can sometimes be very, very dangerous.)

The Winter Soldier / James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes is primarily based in Marvel's cinematic universe, but with additional information from comics canon informing characterization and development. He is from Marvel's Captain America, and is the property of Marvel Comics/Marvel Studios. He appears here solely for the purpose of role-playing in [community profile] milliways_bar, from which no profit whatsoever is being made.
